Finance Uncovered\u00a0will show journalists\u00a0where to find documents, how to analyse them and other practical tools to help uncover financial secrecy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This training will also demonstrate how participants\u00a0can secure those involved in their\u00a0investigation by improving their\u00a0risk assessment and security skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A combination of hands-on training and guidance from senior practitioners will give participants\u00a0the basis to investigate financial corruption as well as offering the opportunity to network with other journalists and activists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course aims to help participants understand:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the building blocks of the offshore world<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to access and interpret company accounts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where to access other company information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the methodology behind the ground-breaking tax avoidance investigations into Google, SAB Miller and Vodafone \u2013 by the journalists who conducted them<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to investigate and report corruption stories<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the steps required to keep safe and minimise personal risk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to track the international policy agenda relating to illicit financial flows<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to keep\u00a0research safe (see below)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Digital Security<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigative journalists following the money often work with sensitive information that adversaries very often do not want exposed. So training on keeping journalists, their\u00a0data and\u00a0sources secure is paramount. This is why during the last section of Finance Uncovered&#8217;s\u00a0training,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepressunlimited.org\/en\/projects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free Press Unlimited<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0will focus on advanced digital security techniques, including encryption, secure communication and methods to stay \u201cunder the radar\u201d during investigations. This focus\u00a0will cover:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Device security, how to keep one\u2019s equipment secure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online security, how to safely operate online<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile security, how to safely use digital equipment on-the-road, including telephones and other devices<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media security, how to safely use social media for research and publication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Bursaries available<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bursaries are available\u00a0<\/span><b>for\u00a0working journalists from Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bursaries cover visa fees, travel and accommodation. Due to the limited number of bursaries, applicants will be selected on their track record in investigative journalism. Activists will have to demonstrate some economic justice research and campaign experience. As Finance Uncovered\u00a0tends to be over-subscribed, some candidates will be placed on a waiting list for a subsequent course either in Jakarta or London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Non-bursary places<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may also be places available for activists, researchers and journalists from global media.
