The COVID-19 pandemic upended economies and continues to cause unprecedented and devastating impacts on lives and livelihoods around the world, especially in the Global South. The recovery measures put in place has seen a resurgence of fiscal consolidation across many Global South countries with the International Monetary Fund promoting austerity policies. This exacerbates inequalities and threatens to undermine the progress achieved in promoting education over the last years due to the reduced resources available for public services such as quality public education.
