Tax Justice Network – Africa in partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa invites suitably qualified African journalists to participate in an upcoming workshop on taxation, the extractives sector and the potential of Africa’s mineral wealth to the continent’s structural transformation. The training workshop is aimed at filling a critical gap in African journalism that looks intuitively and comprehensively at tax and issues around illicit financial flows on the continent. This training seeks to join the dots between mining, taxation and Africa’s structural transformation.
The workshop will be hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg from 26 to 28 June 2017.
The training workshop has the following objectives:
- To develop linkages between the extractives sector and tax justice.
- To improve the understanding of African media practitioners and enable the journalists accurately and adequately report on tax, illicit financial flows, the extractives sector and the role of the Africa Mining Vision, the general tax justice agenda and their linkages to the broader structural transformation of African economies.
- This training also aims to link African journalists to experts and institutions as invaluable resources in future coverage of tax matters across the continent and beyond.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Be a citizen of an African country.
- Must have worked in an established African media outlet of any platform for at least 4 years as a reporter/ editor.
- Have an expressed interest in covering tax and development issues
- Currently working or covering issues related to extractives sector in Africa
- Previous experience in investigative journalism
*This is purely for course development purposes and has no impact on the short-listing process.
- Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
Call for Applications:
Interested journalists should send their applications, including CV and samples of work, to TaxJusticeNetwork-Africa on or before Thursday, 27 April 2016. These should be submitted together with a filled-out copy of a pre-training survey form.
The costs of visa, travel and accommodation for successful applicants will be funded by the workshop organisers.
