The Chair of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ), Luis Moreno, was named for the second year in a row as one of the 50 most influential people globally on tax. Moreno was awarded this honor for his work campaigning for tax justice at GATJ.
Ian Gary, member of GATJ’s Coordination Committee, was also recognized in this list for his work at the FACT Coalition to strengthen public country-by-country reporting and other transparency measures.
Moreno’s work at GATJ was recognized for uniting a broad coalition of civil society organizations and trade unions in making joint submissions to the ongoing negotiations for a UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation. Moreno commented: “This recognition belongs to all of us at the Global Alliance for Tax Justice, a Global South-led coalition working to guarantee that tax justice is at the heart of our public policies so that governments can sustainably finance quality public services, fulfill human rights, ensure development, and advance gender equality and climate action.”
GATJ was also recognized for championing a fair allocation of taxing rights as a cornerstone of building a fair and equitable international tax system. Moreno concluded: “Thanks to the continued efforts of committed members around the world, we close the year with this recognition as a leading organization in the movement for tax justice and the establishment of a UN Tax Convention. The struggle continues, and we look forward to continuing this work in the years ahead.”
