End Austerity Activism Festival 2023: Tax Justice for Inclusive Recovery

As several countries are being pushed to introduce harsh austerity measures, leading to broken public services, shrinking social protection and pensions, and a cost of living crisis, the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ) is proud to endorse the Marrakesh Declaration to End Austerity, and join some member and partner organisations in the 2nd edition of the End Austerity Festival to discuss socio-economic alternatives for a truly inclusive recovery that centres people and the planet.

Ahead of the World Bank (WB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings, the End Austerity Festival will bring together civil society, activists and experts from all over the world this Saturday (7 October), in Marrakesh (Morocco). Participants will share their advocacy know-how and research, speak to their lived realities, and inspire advocacy, action and art. The full programme of the 2023 edition can be found here

On the occasion, GATJ will co-host the session Austerity and Inclusive Recovery: Bridging the Divide, together with Southern members Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA), Red de Justicia Fiscal de América Latina y el Caribe (RJFALC) and Tax and Fiscal Justice Asia (TAFJA), and partners Fight Inequality Alliance (FIA), Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) and Gender Action. Register here for the hybrid event.

Speakers will address the WB/IMF structural adjustment policies and their impacts in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia, and share policy recommendations at all levels.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Riska Koopman (GATJ)
  • Mukasiri Sibanda (TJNA)
  • Nicolas Gutman (RJFALC)
  • Jennifer Lipenga (AMwA)
  • Jenny Ricks (FIA)

“As the WB and IMF return to Africa after more than 50 years, it is the appropriate time to take stock of the realities of austerity for the African continent and the Global South, as well as to put forward new visions for an inclusive recovery,” said Riska Koopman, global policy advocacy and campaigns coordinator at GATJ, who will represent the Alliance in the festival.
