GATJ’s Secretariat Convenes in Nairobi

GATJ’s Secretariat meeting with their regional member, Tax Justice Network Africa.

From April 5th – 12th, the Secretariat of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ) met in Nairobi, Kenya for their annual team retreat. The Secretariat came together to discuss the changes at GATJ, progress made in the past year, and upcoming campaigns.

This past year, the GATJ Secretariat welcomed staff members from across the globe in embedded posts. By hosting the staff in each regional member of GATJ, the GATJ Secretariat has enhanced collaboration with GATJ’s regional members. 2025 also marks an institutional milestone for GATJ with the launch of the strategy review.

The Secretariat came together to reflect on the progress made in the past months. In November, 2024, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly agreed to adopt the terms of reference on a UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation, agreeing to negotiate a Framework Convention and two early protocols from 2025 to mid-2027. For over a decade GATJ has brought together civil society in a campaign to fix the global tax rules. The UN Tax Convention negotiations mark a historic moment in GATJ’s fight for a fair and inclusive international tax system.

GATJ’s Secretariat met with their regional member Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) to discuss plans for the coming year. GATJ’s Secretariat will continue to amplify local, national, and regional efforts at the global level, support South-South collaboration, and act as a voice for the South-led tax justice movement.

As GATJ’s Secretariat looks forward, the alliance continues to advocate for global tax rules that work to eliminate inequalities, between and within countries, and deliver the sustainable public finance urgently needed for development, gender equality, climate action, and public services.
