On 27 and 28 July, the city of Cartagena, Colombia, will host the “1st Latin American and Caribbean Summit for an Inclusive, Sustainable and Equitable Global Tax Order”, organised by the Colombian Ministry of Finance, in partnership with the equivalent ministries from Chile and Brazil. The Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ) will be represented at the event by its executive coordinator, Dereje Alemayehu, who will speak in two panels within the civil society programme.
The first one, “Impactos en la fiscalidad internacional e incidencia en espacios globales”, is organised by the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT) and will be moderated by Luis Moreno, Latindadd’s coordinator and chair of the Coordination Committee of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice. Dereje and other tax justice advocates from Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Spain and Ireland will address the main debates currently happening worldwide about reforming the global taxation system, how Latin America and the Caribbean are impacted and the role the region should play in this discussion.
“For many countries in the region, efforts to mobilise sufficient resources for the financing of social protection policies and productive investment collide with systemic and international dynamics that make progressive reforms difficult. The current international taxation system is unfair, obsolete and is not apt to respond to the current challenges imposed by the digital economy and the free mobility of capital; and so it is so important to carry out significant reforms,’ states ICRICT.
The conversation aims to disseminate information about the issues in this “obsolete” system and the impacts it has especially on Global South countries. By identifying the spaces and processes currently involved in this system, the group intends to discuss advocacy strategies and coordinated responses to combat said issues, such as transnational tax abuse, race to the bottom, financial and fiscal opacity and lack of wealth taxation.
The second panel in which GATJ will participate will approach the intersection between tax justice and the right to education. This panel will be moderated by representatives from GATJ’s regional network on Latin America, Red de Justicia Fiscal en América Latina y el Caribe (RJFALC), Latindadd and Campaña Latinoamericana por el Derecho a la Educación (CLADE), and Luis Moreno will be joining Alemayehu as a speaker.
