La Red de Justicia Fiscal de América Latina y el Caribe (RJFALC) welcomes Brazil’s assumption of the pro tempore presidency of the Latin American and Caribbean Regional Platform for Tax Cooperation (PTLAC), highlighting this step as a key opportunity to strengthen the region’s commitment to fairer, more transparent, and socially-beneficial tax systems.
RJFALC also recognizes the vital role of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) as PTLAC’s Technical Secretariat, supporting regional dialogue and promoting policies aligned with tax justice.
At the recent PTLAC meeting, held during ECLAC’s 37th Regional Seminar on Fiscal Policy in Santiago, Chile, the region’s Ministries of Finance, Economy, and Treasury shared experiences and technical guidance on tax policy challenges.
The meeting demonstrated the growing willingness of countries in the region for international tax cooperation. In a regional context marked by high levels of inequality and tax evasion, coordinated government efforts and the advancement of common proposals are more relevant than ever.
During the ECLAC seminar, held from May 26 to 28, government officials, experts, and representatives from civil society and international organizations—including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), World Bank, OECD, Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), and the Inter-American Center of Tax Administrations (CIAT), among others—shared diagnoses, analyses, and challenges to advance the fight for greater tax transparency and the design of progressive tax systems.
In this context, RJFALC highlights that ECLAC’s role as Technical Secretariat is key not only to providing high-quality technical assistance, but also to ensuring that discussions and proposals are aligned with a vision of inclusive and sustainable development.
Since its creation in July 2023, PTLAC has established itself as a technical and political space for countries in the region to coordinate common positions in the face of global challenges in international taxation. This regional coordination is essential to amplify the voice of the Global South in spaces where it has historically been underrepresented.
