The current global tax architecture has profound implications for gender and global inequality, shaping how taxing rights and revenues are distributed across countries. Developing countries, particularly in Africa, often generate substantial value through natural resources, labor and markets, yet retain limited taxing rights over resulting revenues. This constrains public investment and can deepen gender and social inequalities. This session will explore how a progressive UN Tax Convention could rebalance taxing rights, strengthen source-country taxation, including in the digital economy, and advance tax justice. It will also consider the role of international financial institutions in supporting countries to pursue more equitable and progressive tax reforms.

Throughout the week, GATJ is also supporting the October Week of Action on People Rising for Justice and Liberation, details available here.
