GATJ Welcomes Âurea Mouzinho to the Secretariat

Âurea Mouzinho is joining the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ)’s Secretariat as Global Policy Advocacy and Campaigns Coordinator to lead our tax justice for inclusive recovery project.

With roots on feminist activism and progressive economic scholarship, since 2013 Âurea has held different roles in academia, philanthropy, and civil society working on economics-related research, policy analysis, advocacy and collective organising. She holds a Masters in Development Studies from SOAS (University of London) and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (University of Cape Town and Monash University).

“Joining GATJ feels like returning home to the kind of work that makes my heart beat. Having followed the Alliance for many years, I have come to appreciate the ways in which the struggle for tax justice is deeply connected to the decolonial, feminist and internationalist politics that shape my worldview. I am excited that my work at GATJ will allow me to forefront this politics as I work together with colleagues around the world to ensure tax policies and governance structures, and economies more broadly, serve the people and the planet”, Mouzinho said.

She continued: “This project hinges on leveraging taxation as a means to build equitable, just, sustainable and democratic economies post-pandemic. This is critically important at this juncture, because the pandemic has put into sharp relief the deep failures and heightened social costs of the prevailing austerity- and corporate-based economic logic. In calling for an inclusive recovery, we are seeking to stress that the path to building resilient economies that work for all (and not for the few) lies in strengthening the capacity of States, particularly in the Global South, to guarantee rights and wellbeing. This will only be possible through the provision of public goods and services that are more sustainably and legitimately financed through progressive taxation measures. It is an ambitious project, but this ambition is matched by the energy, commitment, expertise and political clarity that the GATJ team and our partners in the different regions have been consistently bringing to the table. It will be my great privilege to steer this process and support the movement to achieve our visions for just social change.”
