For the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ), the International Women’s Day is a critical moment to highlight the tax issues affecting women and to ensure that tax justice is embedded in the broader women’s rights agenda. Thus, GATJ and its members raise the call to “Make Taxes Work for Women!” as they organise the Global Days of Action on Tax Justice for Women’s Rights from 8-22 March 2018.
In Asia, the Tax and Fiscal Justice Asia (TAFJA) and the Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) are one with GATJ in this call. Members of TAFJA and APMDD joined the Global Days of Action and marked the IWD with protests, marches, mobilisations, and social media actions. From the Philippines to Pakistan, women engaged in various forms of actions to demanded the governments to “Make Taxes Work for Women!” and to raise awareness on tax justice and women’s rights.
In Lahore, Pakistan, women farmers from the Pakistan Rabitta Committee participated in the IWD march and distributed educational flyers on tax justice and women’s rights.
Meanwhile, women fisherfolk also joined hundreds of people in the IWD mobilisation in Toba Tek Singh and carried the “Make Taxes Work for Women!” placards.
